"Fall" in LA

9.26.17

It is officially Fall which in LA means a few more weeks of 80+ temps are in order.  And yet there is always a day or two when it is under 70 for an hour or two before 9am and everyone is suddenly wearing giant sweaters as though it is not going to be twenty degrees warmer in a matter of minutes.  Basically the only way to tell when it is Fall in LA is when you see two friends eating lunch and one is in a sundress and the other is in a turtleneck and boots.

Last weekend we headed to The Beverly Hills Hotel for lunch.  It is one of our favorite spots in LA.  We usually eat inside at the Fountain Room but because it was such a beautiful sunny “Fall” day we decided to sit outside by the pool – which was packed.  The whole place is beautiful.  Everything is pink and covered in palm print and the grounds are like an exceptionally well-groomed jungle.

Levis cutoffs are probably my absolute favorite thing to wear. As they wear in, they look better and better but also become more fragile.  I still have an amazing pair from high school but at this point they have been patched and repatched and are held together by only a few delicate threads so they must be saved for special occasions.  This pair I picked up a year or two ago from Lot, Stock and Barrel.  They always have a great selection of vintage denim and reasonable prices.  They also sew a little bit above the hem so they don’t fray too much.

This Equipment shirt is a long time fave as well.  I love their silk shirts.  So easy to wear and they dress up anything.  This star print is playful and classic at the same time.  You can wear them all the way buttoned up for a completely different look but because it was so hot, I kept it open and rolled the sleeves all the way up.

My one small attempt to make this look a tiny bit different than what I wore all summer long was to add suede boots.  Apparently red boots are a huge trend for this season which is awesome because I got this pair from Loeffler Randall last year and absolutely love them.  The heel is low enough and thick enough for everyday wear.  They are super comfortable and the color is such a great tomato red.

I kept the rest of the accessories very light and summery.  Might as well use my white eyelet Louie while it is still sunny and beautiful right?  I am wearing Ray-Ban Clubmasters which are my favorite style – universally flattering and timeless.  I borrowed one of Cam’s watched for the day to mix things up a bit.  The Submariner is sporty and bigger than my everyday watch but still goes with everything.  I might have a hard time parting with this one…

I am clearly a fan of vintage, but to me vintage means timeless not just old. I look for pieces with iconic and classic design elements.  It can be hard to create a layered look especially when the temp is still warm but here in LA it can get a little chilly as soon as the sun goes down so having a light extra layer is always nice.  This short sleeve OG-107 cotton shirt is lightweight and breathable - the perfect summer layering item.  My vintage Vietnam era shirt was sourced from the Rose Bowl Flea market, which Glynn and I frequent.  I love vintage patches and collect them when I find them at flea markets.  I had the good folks at Lot, Stock and Barrel add a few extra but era specific patches to this shirt to add to the unique look and feel of the garment.

My t-shirt is a vintage 1960’s white undershirt that I sourced from the awesome vintage dealer No Grand Rituals.  He frequents the local flea markets and always has the best fitted white tee shirts.  I went with a pair of black Levis 510 jeans to add to the Rock n’ Roll look and feel of this outfit.  They have a nice extra slim fit and a bit of stretch.

I have on a pair of Korean war era black jump boots that have achieved an awesome patina.  I think were used by a painter at some point because they have splotches of different colored paint all over them, which I love.   I love when functional elements of my wardrobe can also tell a story.  Later that day Glynn and I stopped in at YSL and the sales person asked me if the boots were from Maison Margiela and couldn’t believe they were real vintage boots.  I always like having the real deal version of something.   And while these boots were not cheap by any stretch I really like having things in my wardrobe that are unique and one of a kind.  Glynn jokes that I’m always wearing boots that she has never seen before as I have a bit of a crazy vintage boot collection but I wear these boots quite frequently as they are functional and insanely comfortable!

I am wearing a Vintage 1977 Rolex Daytona ref 6263 which is a stand alone icon in its own right.  I love the look and feel of the vintage Rolex Daytonas they are smaller in size then the modern Daytonas and possess a wonderful and warm feel that the modern equivalents don’t possess.
